We hear it all around us – the pain of people in their own way. Mothers and daughters overburdened. Sons and fathers lacking a clear identity for themselves. Grandparents living longer, but less and less meaningfully, and with more impediments…

I know that our profession – could help the world in its new state – with all its complexity and sophisticated needs if people believed in us and came to us for help and, we had the confidence to take up that role.

Yet our profession is not necessarily seen as the “go-to” place for help. People turn to other things – things like food, the internet, television, books, and other more insidious self-numbing addictions – making things worse – for far too long before they consider professional therapeutic help from you or me.

In fact, therapists are often seen as the place of last resort – where to go when NOTHING else works, rather than eagerly approached for support when a problem arises.

Our society has changed! And the way we as humans interact happily with it has changed also. We know that we, as therapists, can help. WE can, but WILL WE continue to do so… ??
 

If we want to change the world..if we want the respect it takes to help in the way we know we can and live the lives we want…what do we do?

For our profession…it’s not enough to sit by the side lines and watch the world wilt, suffer, or even sleepily wonder what is going on – not in my opinion.
 
Because when a person knows better, we ought to DO better. And we know better, you and I, I know we do.
 

My name is Casey Truffo, and in case you don’t know me well yet…. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in California. Twenty-three years ago I felt called to make a difference in this world – to help people live happier – more fully – and to find more love in their lives. When I decided to leave my corporate job to become a therapist, several senior clinicians tried to talk me out of it. I heard again and again from seasoned therapists, “Don’t do this. We don’t get much respect. And you certainly can’t make a living doing this work.”

But, as you know, a calling is a calling. And not only did I create a private practice that served many in my community, I have made it my mission to teach other clinicians that they too can have both the satisfaction of doing great work and making a decent living.

I see clinicians face many of the same struggles today – the fluctuating economy, the limited respect for our work and just plain burnout – which we have, in our self-sacrificing way, termed ‘compassion fatigue.’ I get it. I do. And I want to reach through this computer and give every one of you a big hug and beg you not to quit before the miracle.

Most importantly, what is in my heart is a desire – a big desire to collectively dust off our star … to remind ourselves of the powerful and wonderful work we do. To reconnect with the reason we got into the profession….the reason we look into our clients eyes with love and compassion the way we do – each day, hour by hour.

I believe it is time for us to help be active contributors to the bettering of the new world situation. Somehow, we must find a way to once again, proudly, be seen fully as who we are and how we help people.

It starts with us – each of us – believing in ourselves, in our work, and in the possibilities. And there is some very good news.

This time in our lives – this chaos we are experiencing in the world – doesn’t have to lead to chaotic feelings. From chaos comes newness. Like the forest fire that leads to the destruction of a stand of timber, new growth can climb up within its place.

And there are so many possibilities today for us to serve – to make this world a better place! We are no longer tied to just the traditional one-to-one practice – we can choose a myriad of other business models to keep us happy, full, and loving our work!

No longer do we have to feel:
- Tense and overworked from session to session, day to day, week by week.
- Underutilized because we’re limited by the number of people who find us and work with us.
- Personally exhausted because of the nature of intense one on one work.
- Unclear about the future of therapy – now that so many case studies of alternative therapist success are available to observe and learn from.
- Confused about how to let people know who were are and that we are committed to making a difference
- Uncomfortable about what’s coming personally – within a resilient community of therapists, we can weather change together.
- Beleaguered by options – though there are lots of ways therapists can improve themselves, there are a few trusted sources that have been around a long time, and finally, there is a more intense community experience available.

Let’s take up the baton, and do what we know we can. We need the world to know that we are here to help with the chaos in our relationships, in our families and within ourselves.

First we put on our big girl pants (or big boy trousers) and remember why we do this work! Let’s give ourselves, our businesses, and our profession the gift we ask of our clients – more self-respect, greater love and the depths of compassion.

If we don’t do it, it’s not as if we can go ask our parents to do it for us, right? We know better than that…even if it is a funny thought.

And then let’s explore practical ways to make building our businesses easier, more fun, and more lucrative. Let’s get re-energized…just like when we graduated with our degree but with the wisdom and experience we’ve earned.

And I am throwing a 3-day live conference to do just that! I will be there to share with you my ideas, plans, and hopes for success – for the profession and for you as a happy and financially successful business owner. Plus we will have several guest speakers to keep you inspired and motivated.

This three day event is not your same-old-same-old therapy conference with respected professors in sports jackets talking about theories and therapy techniques. There is a time and place for that but this is not it. At this conference, we’ll dig in deeper to our purpose and role as therapists and how to stretch the limits of our own practices to better connect with and heal our communities.
